Together, anything is possible.

It’s Monday morning at Sunny Hill School (Urgh, it’s Monday), and the students are obsessed with a new game led by the class bully, Riley, called “Splat the Bugs.” But not everyone is a fan. One student, Ariana, refuses to join in and wishes the others would stop playing. Ariana has a special secret, a best friend who happens to be a spider named Syd, living in the cupboard of the classroom.

One day, during playtime, Ariana stays behind to chat with Syd (Hey Friend, How’ve You Been). But the peaceful moment is interrupted when Riley returns early, catches Ariana talking to Syd, and threatens to “splat” the spider. Panicked, Ariana throws Syd out of the classroom to save him. While this protects Syd, it also leaves Syd without a home.

Alone in the playground, Syd reflects on the importance of focusing on what unites everyone, rather than what divides them (Weaving a Web). Just as Syd builds up the courage to move forward, a lively ladybird named Lady Fuchsia appears, on the way to a meeting. Lady Fuchsia convinces Syd to join and meet the other members of “The Bugs Against Getting Splatted Society” (BAGSS for short).

The BAGSS meet under the school stage, where they’re rehearsing for their annual talent show. Syd is introduced to the quirky and loveable group: B the Bee, Cookie the Caterpillar, Frankie the Fly, Melody the Moth, Sandy the Slug, and the dancing “Antz.” Syd feels welcomed and even discovers a hidden talent for dancing, which leads the bugs to invite Syd to perform in their show (Bugs Against Getting Splatted). Though hesitant, Syd agrees to join.

Meanwhile, the children are also preparing for their school talent show. Riley is busy rehearsing a dance act, but it’s clear it needs a lot of work. After practice, Riley heads back to the stage to grab a forgotten bag and catches Syd rehearsing a dance. Seeing an opportunity to wow the audience, Riley captures Syd and decides to make the spider a part of the act as a “dancing spider.”

Ariana, worried about Syd’s disappearance, reflects on their friendship and vows to find the spider (Friends for Life). At the same time, the BAGSS members grow concerned when Syd doesn’t show up for rehearsal. Remembering Syd had mentioned Ariana, Lady Fuchsia and the bugs decide to search for Ariana, even if it means taking the risk of venturing into the playground.

The bugs create a diversion to distract the children and approach Ariana to explain what’s happened. They quickly realise the playground isn’t safe and agree to meet at lunchtime in their hideout under the stage. However, during playtime, the other children notice Ariana talking to themself (unaware Ariana is talking to bugs) and start making fun of Ariana (Look at Ariana).

Later, Ariana spots Riley hiding Syd in a box in the playground. Once Riley leaves, Ariana reunites with Syd. Instead of freeing Syd immediately, they decide to come up with a plan to end the bug-splatting game for good.

At lunchtime, Ariana and Syd join the BAGSS in their hideout and share a plan. Together, they decide to secretly join Riley’s act during the talent show, making it so good that Riley, and the rest of the children, might finally see how special bugs truly are (Put Your Hands in the Middle).

That evening, the school talent show begins. During Riley’s act, the BAGSS bugs sneak onstage and perform alongside Riley. The audience loves it, and Riley’s performance becomes a show-stopper. But just as the spotlight boosts Riley’s confidence, Riley ruins the moment by inviting everyone to join another round of “Splat the Bugs.”

Ariana steps in, using the opportunity to explain to the classmates the harmful effects of the game and how bullying hurts everyone, including the bugs. Slowly, the children realise the damage caused and agree to stop playing. Riley finds themself standing alone, but after some encouragement from the others, decides to quit the game too.

In the end, the children and bugs celebrate with a joyful song and dance, highlighting the power of understanding, empathy, and teamwork (Singing the Same Tune).

Scaredy Bugs is a heartwarming musical about courage, friendship, and standing up for what’s right, proving that even the smallest voices can make a big difference!
